A potential U.S. ban on diesel exports risks unleashing a severe crisis across European logistics, threatening to drive transportation costs to unprecedented heights. As Washington grapples with domestic fuel inflation, the White House is weighing export restrictions and looking into whether European nations could tap strategic fuel reserves. With Middle Eastern and Russian supplies heavily constrained, Europe has grown critically dependent on American diesel, which now accounts for roughly half of the bloc’s seaborne fuel imports.

An abrupt halt to American shipments would leave Europe’s road freight industry highly vulnerable. Industry federations warn that pump prices could easily surpass €3 per liter, compounding record highs. Because transport accounts for the vast majority of diesel consumption, any shock here ripples directly through the economy—making everyday goods significantly more expensive. Small and medium-sized trucking companies, already operating on razor-thin margins with tight cash flows and mounting bankruptcies, face imminent collapse if forced to absorb prolonged high prices. Larger operators may survive by passing costs onto clients via fuel surcharges, but smaller firms might find it economically wiser to park their trucks entirely. The resulting reduction in transport capacity could quickly cause delivery delays, long queues at depots, and critical shortages, turning fuel availability into a matter of continental economic security.
