To combat record diesel prices fueled by conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, the US government is loaning out emergency heating oil just ahead of the November elections to ease the burden on households.

Unlocking Emergency Supplies Driven by bipartisan requests, the US Department of Energy is set to loan up to 315,000 barrels—nearly a third of the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve. The fuel, sourced from facilities in Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts, will be distributed to retailers and terminal operators via competitive bidding with a delivery deadline of November 13. This marks only the second deployment of the million-barrel stockpile since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Market Pressures and Election Stakes The intervention aims to counter severe diesel shortages triggered by ongoing wars in Ukraine and Iran, which have pushed prices above $6.50 per gallon. Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the Trump administration’s commitment to cutting energy costs. The timing is critical, as soaring heating bills dominate the narrative ahead of the November 3 elections, where Republicans are fighting to maintain control of Congress. With heating oil warming roughly half the homes in Maine and a third across New England, the crisis directly impacts highly contested Senate races. Key battles include Republican Susan Collins in Maine, Dan Sullivan facing Democrat Mary Peltola in Alaska, and an open seat toss-up in New Hampshire between Democrat Chris Pappas and Republican John Sununu.

Broader Energy Initiatives Beyond heating oil, the administration is advancing the Constitution natural gas pipeline—designed to link Pennsylvania gas to New York and New England—using $42 million in Defense Production Act funds, despite environmental roadblocks erected by New York. Concurrently, to stabilize crude oil markets shaken by the Iranian conflict, the government has already loaned 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). These massive withdrawals have driven the critical stockpiles in Texas and Louisiana to their lowest levels since 1982.
