Breakthrough Appraisal Results in the North Sea
Orlen Upstream Norway, alongside field operator Equinor and partners DNO and Wellesley Petroleum, has concluded appraisal drilling at the unconventional Afrodyta field (license PL293, located northwest of Bergen). Although the site was first drilled nearly two decades ago, inconclusive data at the time stalled development. Recent technological advancements in upstream extraction prompted the consortium to drill a new well to confirm gas volumes and determine an optimal development plan. According to Wiesław Prugar, Orlen’s Vice President for Upstream, preliminary findings have more than doubled the field’s recoverable resource estimates, positioning Afrodyta to surpass Omega Alfa (averaging 115 million barrels of oil equivalent—boe), the Norwegian shelf’s largest recent discovery.

Surging Volume Estimates for Orlen
When Orlen acquired a 25% stake in Afrodyta from Vår Energi in February 2026, total recoverable reserves were projected at roughly 50 million boe, with 12 million boe net to the Polish company. Following the latest appraisal campaign, Equinor revised total recoverable estimates to a range of 77–180 million boe, averaging 128 million boe. Consequently, Orlen’s net share has jumped to over 32 million boe—translating to more than 4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas, alongside crude oil and other hydrocarbons.

Infrastructure Synergies and Strategic Expansion
To reduce capital expenditure and fast-track production, the consortium is evaluating a tie-back to the existing Kvitebjørn field infrastructure, where both Orlen and Equinor are already shareholders. Initiating production at Afrodyta is also expected to facilitate the development of adjacent hydrocarbon prospects. Beyond Afrodyta, Orlen is actively expanding its unconventional portfolio on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, having acquired a stake in 2026 in the Victoria field—Norway’s largest undeveloped gas discovery. Leveraging international expertise in unconventional reservoirs supports the broader strategy of the multi-energy Orlen Group, which operates refineries across Poland, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, runs a pan-European fuel station network, and invests heavily in petrochemicals, renewables, and small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs).
