Breakthrough in Australia-EU Trade Talks? Don Farrell Reports „Productive Call”

Executive Summary
A potential further opening of the European market, this time to Australian goods and products.

Trade relations between Canberra and Brussels are gaining significant momentum. Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell has reported encouraging progress following a discussion with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič. Following the collapse of negotiations in 2023, both parties are now signaling a renewed commitment to securing a deal that serves their respective economic interests.

Agriculture remains the primary sticking point, with Australia advocating for expanded market access for its beef and lamb exporters. In exchange, the European Union is seeking streamlined access to Australia’s critical minerals and lower tariffs on manufactured goods. According to unofficial reports from Bloomberg, negotiations have entered the „final stretch,” and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen could arrive in Australia as early as this weekend to finalize the agreement.
