Crude Oil Surges as Red Sea Attacks and Mideast Conflict Escalate

Résumé
Oil prices rise amid Houthi attacks on tankers and ongoing US-Iran strikes. Brent approaches $100/bbl as supply route threats outweigh a weekly build in US crude and product inventories.

Energy Markets Rally: Red Sea Escalation Threatens Middle Eastern Supply Chains
Crude oil futures extended their upward trajectory across global commodity exchanges as geopolitical friction in the Middle East intensified. Alongside ongoing US military strikes targeting Iranian positions, Houthi forces have launched attacks on Saudi oil tankers, drastically elevating supply failure risks across the region.

Market valuations reflected the heightened risk premium:

  • WTI Crude (NYMEX): September delivery contracts advanced 1.64% to $88.25 per barrel.
  • Brent Crude (ICE): September futures climbed 2.10% to $96.05 per barrel.

With the Strait of Hormuz rendered virtually impassable due to the broader conflict involving Israel and Iran, Saudi Arabia had rerouted significant export volumes toward its Red Sea shipping hubs. However, explicit blockade threats from Houthi militants are now compelling a growing number of maritime carriers to bypass the waterway altogether, opening a volatile new front in the regional war.

„The sustainability of this crude rally hinges on whether these Red Sea disruptions remain isolated events or evolve into a prolonged supply chain blockage. Market bulls can realistically set their sights on the $100 per barrel mark for Brent.”

Senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes echoed these concerns, warning that any sustained reduction in maritime traffic through the Red Sea will severely exacerbate existing global market tightness.

US Inventory Update
In contrast to the supply constraints in the Middle East, official figures released by the US Department of Energy (DoE) revealed an across-the-board build in domestic fuel reserves:

  • Crude Oil: Inventories expanded by 2.01 million barrels (+0.49%) to 411.67 million barrels.
  • Gasoline: Supplies rose by 765,000 barrels (+0.36%) to 211.29 million barrels.
  • Distillates (including heating oil): Stocks increased by 1.4 million barrels (+1.29%) to 109.57 million barrels.
