The LNG terminal in Świnoujście, a cornerstone of Poland’s energy infrastructure handling roughly 40% of the nation’s natural gas imports, recently welcomed the Ignacy Jan Paderewski methane carrier. Loaded at the Venture Global LNG facility in Calcasieu Pass, the vessel delivered over 100 million cubic meters of gas (post-regasification). Currently, Poland’s LNG intake relies entirely on shipments from the United States, a direct result of ongoing geopolitical instability.
Halted Qatari Shipments
Recent military actions by Israel and the US against Iran have effectively choked the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, deliveries from Qatar—the world’s second-largest LNG exporter—have been completely suspended. The last Qatari vessel, the Duhail, docked in Poland on March 24. Reports from Doha indicate that shipments have been postponed until at least August, pushing the earliest possible arrival of Qatari gas in Poland to September.
Despite the disruption, Orlen is not rushing to secure spot market transactions. European gas prices on the TTF have spiked to over 46 EUR/MWh (up from 33 EUR/MWh a year ago), making ad-hoc purchases economically unappealing. Fortunately, Poland boasts a comfortable gas storage fill rate of 53.67%—the fourth highest in the EU—eliminating any immediate pressure to overpay for resources.
Orlen’s Growing Chartered Fleet
The arrival of the „Paderewski” marks the 443rd delivery in the terminal’s history and the 33rd this year (matching the exact delivery count at this point last year). The vessel is part of the so-called „Orlen fleet.” However, rather than owning and managing these highly specialized ships directly, the Polish energy giant charters them on a long-term basis. Out of the eight chartered vessels, six sail under the French flag and two under the Greek flag.
So far, only five of the eight carriers have visited the Świnoujście terminal. Here is the current status of the fleet:
- Danuta Siedzikówna-Inka and Rotmistrz Witold Pilecki: The newest additions to the fleet are heading to the Gulf of Mexico for their maiden US cargo runs. The former is near Jamaica, while the latter recently passed Cape Town.
- Józef Piłsudski: Currently anchored near Singapore, this vessel primarily transports Malaysian LNG to Asian markets (such as Japan) and is unlikely to visit Poland soon.
- Lech Kaczyński: The most frequent visitor to Świnoujście with 10 deliveries (totaling ~1 billion cubic meters of gas). It is currently moored at Calcasieu Pass.
- Ignacy Łukasiewicz: Has completed six deliveries to Poland and is currently sailing past Cape Town.
- Grażyna Gęsicka and Święta Barbara: Each boasts five visits to the Polish terminal. The „Gęsicka” is heading to Spain from Croatia, while the „Barbara” recently left Calcasieu Pass and is en route to Świnoujście.
Future visits from the remaining vessels will depend heavily on evolving transport needs and global market conditions.
