US-based LNG supplier Venture Global continues to face severe legal and reputational fallout from its controversial trading practices. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the company bypassed its long-term supply obligations from its Louisiana facility, citing alleged technical issues. In reality, the firm redirected its production to the spot market to capitalize on soaring gas prices.

This strategy severely impacted major European energy players, including BP, Shell, Portugal’s Galp, Spain’s Repsol, Italy’s Edison, and Poland’s Orlen, which faced delivery delays of nearly two years. These breaches triggered a wave of arbitration cases with highly mixed outcomes, a divergence likely reflecting the varying strength of clauses within the confidential contracts.

To date, Venture Global has secured victories against Shell and Repsol, but suffered major defeats against BP and Galp. The dispute with Edison was resolved through a settlement guaranteeing additional LNG cargoes. Meanwhile, the arbitration ruling regarding Orlen’s delayed shipments remains pending and is expected later this year.

The financial penalties resulting from these defeats vary significantly. The compensation for Galp will be determined in a separate hearing scheduled for 2027 or 2028, with damages strictly capped at $170 million. Conversely, the 2025 loss to BP represents a massive financial blow. The British giant is seeking at least $3.7 billion, a figure that could easily exceed $6 billion once interest and associated fees are factored in.

Although Venture Global is currently meeting its supply obligations flawlessly—largely because the cooled spot market makes steady, long-term contracts much more appealing and necessary—the reputational damage is lasting. The industry was shocked by the firm’s willingness to sideline long-term partners for immediate gains under the guise of technical difficulties, leading many market players to view the company as an entirely unreliable long-term partner.
