Persian Gulf Conflict Intensifies: Oil Prices Surge as Strait of Hormuz Faces Renewed Disruptions

Resumen ejecutivo
Renewed US-Iran clashes endanger Persian Gulf shipping. Brent crude surged 5%, transit rates plummeted, and global financial markets face fresh anxieties over energy-driven inflation.

The ongoing retaliatory cycle between Washington and Tehran in the Persian Gulf has introduced fresh perils for commercial vessels trying to cross the Strait of Hormuz, unsettling financial markets. Early Monday, global benchmark Brent crude jumped nearly 5 percent to $79 per barrel, marking a 9 percent increase compared to prewar baselines.

Data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler indicates that daily commercial traffic through this vital chokepoint has plunged to recent lows, with a mere 22 vessels navigating the passage on Thursday. Before the conflict, daily transits regularly exceeded 130 ships. This latest military escalation followed a U.S. strike on roughly 140 targets within Iran, launched after Tehran struck a container ship. By Monday, Iran responded by targeting American military positions stationed in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.

Market analysts observe that any sense of security gained from last month’s preliminary truce has vanished overnight. Although the International Energy Agency noted a significant June supply boost of 6.5 million barrels per day, further stabilization depends heavily on an immediate cooling of hostilities. Economists fear that instead of an expected oil surplus, high energy costs could trigger „demand destruction” globally. In the U.S., retail gasoline averages $3.88 a gallon, dampening appetite for equities on Wall Street and in Asia, while pushing 10-year Treasury yields up to 4.58 percent.

Even so, some experts suggest that commodity markets have grown accustomed to this geopolitical volatility, meaning recent price movements may not fully capture the gravity of the situational risk. The conflict remains centered on shipping lanes; Iran opposes vessels veering into Omani territorial waters under U.S. military escort. The lately targeted vessels were struck within Oman’s jurisdiction, while the traditional central route remains unusable due to the threat of Iranian naval mines.
